What is a contact sheet used for?

Photographers use contact sheets to review coverage, compare expressions, check a sequence or discuss a shortlist. A client can refer to a labelled preview without opening every original file.

Suppose a shoot contains 48 proof images. A 4 × 4 layout makes three pages. That overview is useful for checking coverage. A smaller shortlist in a 2 × 3 layout gives each image more space for a closer review.

What is the difference between film and digital contact sheets?

A traditional film contact sheet places small images from a roll together for inspection. A digital sheet arranges image files into a similar overview. The digital version can include filenames, page numbers and layout choices rather than relying on the negative's frame number.

Is a contact sheet the same as a photo collage?

A contact sheet helps someone identify and compare images. A collage usually creates a final composition. Consistent labels and predictable image order matter more for a proof sheet than decorative cropping.

What information belongs under each photo?

Use an index number and a recognisable filename. Add context through the sheet title. If two cameras reuse the same filename, a label alone cannot prove which original is intended. Keep a separate manifest with asset IDs and the sheet order.

How large should the thumbnails be?

Make them large enough for the decision. A dense page can show which subjects were covered. It may be too small to compare eye focus or expression. Move a shortlist to a larger grid when finer detail matters.

How can I create my own?

Start with a photography contact-sheet template or follow the step-by-step contact-sheet guide. Keep your originals and export proofs when a file format is not supported.
